Christian Louboutini was born on 7th January 1963 in 12th arrondissement of Paris is a french footwear designer whose red, shiny soles are his signature. Only brother of three sisters, he was the son of Irene, a housewife and Roger, a cabinet maker. Louboutin got expelled from his school more than two times.

From his early teenage years, Louboutin started making shoe illustrations and sketches avoiding his formal education. He first started working at Folies Bergères. During his phase of punk, he appeared in some films, such as The Homosexual Century, and Race d’ep. He was a party-o-holic and clubbed with Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger.

His only proper training was decorative arts and drawing from the Académie d’Art Roederer. It was in 1976, Louboutin asserts that he became interested in shoes, when he went to Musée national des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie. Christian Louboutin wanted to make shoes that women wear and feel empowered and confident. This was because he saw in Africa that women were forbidden to wear pointed stilettos since they damage wooden floors and Louboutin wanted to challenge this mindset.

In his teenage years he ran away to Egypt, then stayed in India for a year and eventually came back to Paris in 1981. There he compiled a portfolio of detailed high heel drawings. He showed his work to the leading fashion house. Consequently, he was hired to work with Charles Jourdan. He later met Roger Vivier and started working as his apprentice.

Louboutin started to work as a freelance, designing female shoes for Maud Frizon, Yves Saint Laurent, and Chanel. In the late 80s, he took a break from fashion and turned towards landscape gardening. He contributed his ideas to Vogue, however he missed his shoe-making job.

Hence, in 1991 he set up his own company. His first client was Monaco’s Princess Caroline. Her comments on the media helped increase Christian Louboutin’s popularity. As result, he got customers like Catherine Deneuve and Diane von Fürstenberg. Moreover, personalities interested in getting his stilettos have been Joan Collins, Madonna, Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, and Christina Aguilera. In addition, his shoe design was worn by Sarah Jessica Parker at her wedding. Britney Spears also wore his design in If U Seek Amy.

For three years, Louboutin’s brand has topped the Luxury Brand Status Index of Luxury Institute. Offerings by his brand were declared as the most prestigious shoes for women consecutively in 2007 until 2009.  His brand of shoes became the most widely searched shoe brand online in 2011.

In the 90s and 2000s, it was Christian Louboutin who revived the trend of stilettos by designing various styles with 4 or more inches high heels. He also makes low-heeled shoes. His designs are mostly for evenings and are embellished with bows, leather, feather, studded straps and so on. His objective is to make females look beautiful and sexy. His is renowned for his sammy red bottoms – a kind of shoe with red soles.

Moving on, with Louboutin’s commitment to designing shoes, his company expanded worldwide. He opened the first men’s shop in New York and boutique in Paris. Out of consideration for his customers, he separated the men and women area since women felt uncomfortable of being stared at while trying on shoes.

Christian Louboutin continues to redefine the boundaries of his fashion empire, transitioning from a master of footwear into a global lifestyle visionary. In 2021, the brand reached a significant corporate milestone when Exor, the holding company of the Agnelli family, acquired a 24% stake in the company for €541 million. This strategic partnership, which valued the Maison at over €2.2 billion, was aimed at accelerating Louboutin’s international growth, particularly within the Chinese market and the digital luxury space, while maintaining the brand’s creative independence.

Beyond the realm of high fashion, Louboutin has expanded his creative reach into hospitality and family lifestyle. In April 2023, he inaugurated his first boutique hotel, Vermelho, in Melides, Portugal—a project that showcases his passion for architecture and craftsmanship. Additionally, the designer launched “LoubiFamily” in 2022, a dedicated line featuring children’s footwear and pet accessories. His enduring cultural impact was further cemented by the major retrospective exhibition L’Exhibition[niste], which debuted at the Palais de la Porte Dorée in Paris and later traveled to Monaco, celebrating over thirty years of his artistic ingenuity and the iconic legacy of the red-lacquered sole.
